We Can Beat Sioux City’s Craptacular Viral Video

This is a call to arms.  The video below, which markets Sioux City (if you’ve been there you know that’s an uphill battle in itself), seems to be getting a pretty ridiculous amount of viral buzz over the last couple days.  I’m pretty sure that the world of viral video mimics real life, which would imply that we here in Lincoln should be able to make something bigger, better, nicer-looking, catchier, and viral-er.  The one concept I’d keep is people lip-syncing a song.  For some reason that formula just works  (is there anyone who didn’t love the end of Something About Mary?)

If we can get the right song, it could be perfect.  Any ideas?  Do we use a tried-and true song or an original Lincoln-inspired song?  Imagine Bo Pelini & Tom Osborne showing a little animation.  How about Ken Siemek dancing in the street?  Mayor Beutler air-guitaring?  Let’s make it happen.

Time for me (John) to play “Buzzkill”, the grumpy old man.

You want to make a viral video to “beat” Sioux City’s? Really?

Unless you plan to get AC/DC, Bruce Springsteen or even Elton-freakin-John to compose and perform, prepare to be unmercilously mocked by the rest of the country that is already mocking the Sioux City video.

Besides, the only words that rhyme with Lincoln are:

    blinkin’
    clinkin’
    drinkin’
    sinkin’
    winkin’

    and stinkin’

Which would make a Hell of a country-western song, if you think about it.

    Cue banjo…..

While that definitele was craptastic, in their defense it looks like they knew it was craptastic and were just having fun with it. It’s always funner if they don’t know how ridiculous they look.

I was a DJ for about 3 years in a smaller market than Lincoln. During that time, “We Built This City” from Starship was a hit. Why, I don’t know. What I do know is it is one of the most irritating songs of all time. The only ones close to it are Toni Basil’s “Mickey” and “Physical” by Olivia Newton-John. I could only watch about the first 30 seconds of this video before I stopped. If you want a funny yet campy video to promote something try this one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ArMvjy8egRg&feature=player_embedded

    In summary, “This” to Jeremy!
